There’s a lot of discussion going on about Mary and Martha these days, those two famous sisters of the New Testament who were friends of Jesus. That’s because we’re in a Martha-oriented world. Do this, go there, run that, minister to them, help those…just like Martha, we run around so busy, we often don’t have time to spend with God.
Yet Jesus put everything into perspective when He said, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42, NIV)
Better. Meeting alone with God is better than feeding the hungry. Sitting at the feet of Jesus is more important than ministering to the world. Spending time with God is more important than anything we feel we need to do.
So go ahead. Feed the homeless. Minister to the world. Do what God has called you to do. But make time for what’s better. Carve out one hour each day in the middle of it all to meet alone with God.
