The Secret Places of the Stairs

O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock,
in the secret places of the stairs,
Let me see your face,
Let me hear your voice;
For your voice is sweet,
And your face is lovely.
-Song of Songs 2:14, KJV and NKJV

Have you ever been there? Have you ever run to the cleft of the Rock? Have you ever run to God for comfort in the midst of your distress and suddenly discovered you’ve arrived in the secret places of the stairs?

Just as Jacob discovered that night at Bethel when he saw angels coming down and going up the ladder between heaven and earth, the secret places of the stairs is like a heavenly portal. (See Genesis 28.) It’s a place where we can move freely between heaven and earth, talking with God, experiencing wonderful times of refreshment in His glorious presence, and feasting with Him on His Word. It’s a place where we can leave the cares and sorrows of our world behind, push open the door to the heavenly courts, and enter the throne room of God to worship Him freely in spirit and in truth.

Isaiah discovered the secret places of the stairs. (See Isaiah 6.) It’s a place where we can see the Lord in all His awesome glory, be purified from the sins that weigh us down, and be strenthened to fulfill our purposes.

Jesus invites us to come to the secret places of the stairs. “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly” (Matthew 6:6, KJV).

God invites us to come to the secret places of the stairs. In His great love for us, He longs to see our lovely face lifted up to Him in worship and praise. He longs to hear our sweet, sweet voice whispering precious words of love and adoration, calling on the name of Jesus to save us from our distress. We are beautiful in His eyes, and He longs for us to take time out of our busy day so that He can tell us how much He loves us.
